Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Though we usually use our hands to increase blood flow work through soft-tissue injuries, some restrictions are too deep to be detected by fingers alone, and fingers alone are unable to treat the full range of restrictions. In such instances, Dixon Physical Therapy uses advanced handheld tools to perform what's called Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, IASTM.

IASTM treatment is used to break up scar tissue at an injury site to trigger a local inflammatory response. This inflammation leads to the absorption of scar tissue and the production of new collagen to repair the injury site. Combined with proper movement, stretching, and cold therapy after treatment, the body restores normal tissue structure and function. Treatments are short, specific, and effective for a wide variety of ailments.

Benefits:

  • May decrease overall time of treatment

  • Fosters faster rehabilitation and recovery

  • Reduces the need for anti-flammatory medication

  • Resolves chronic conditions thought to be permanent
